Sporting Events Concessions

There’s a lot of money to be made selling food & drinks at college and professional sporting events. We live near the University of Illinois, and this year our teen-youth group will be walking through the crowd selling soda and food (no alcohol) during Illini and Bears football games. We will get a percentage of what our team sells. The concession director also gave us the option of preparing food if we didn’t want to walk through the crowd.

If you sign up early enough you can get an actual concession stand. One Christian school in the area was said to have made $26,000 in sales by working 6 games! (This may not be an accurate figure, it’s just what I heard). This is a great fundraiser if you have a small church like ours, because our church can’t financially support our group.

  1. Everyone provides their own chair.
  2. Each participant must rock for at least 4 hours in succession.
  3. Time breaks only allowed for trips to the bathroom.
  4. The chair must be moving at all times.

Even More Rockathon Ideas

We have quite a small church family and we were building a wheelchair ramp. The ramp cost a lot of money, money we were having trouble raising. Three of us got together and planned a rock-a-thon that included anyone in the church who wished to participate. We had ages seven to seventy+ rocking. These are a few ideas we used during the 24 hour rock:

  1. We had TONS of prizes donated and everyone went home with something.
  2. We had food donated too, which kept the costs at close to nothing.
  3. We had a movie going almost all the time for entertainment.
  4. We had an open house for anyone who wanted to come and see what we were up to. This raised a lot of money also through our donation box.
  5. We had rockercize which was a great way to keep us moving while we rocked.
  6. We played Bingo with lots of great prizes.
  7. We had crafts and thank you cards to make for our sponsors

It took a lot of work, but everyone loved it and wants to have one again this year, even though our new ramp is paid for. One important thing was that we had a clean up crew come in the next day so we didn’t have to worry about that at all. Our small church family raised over eleven hundred dollars and there were only about twenty people rocking. We were really happy with the results. Happy rocking!!!

Successful Fundraising : A Complete Handbook for Volunteers and Professionals

In Successful Fundraising, nationally recognized expert Joan Flanagan gives readers the information they need to capture a fair share of available fundraising dollars. Community volunteers and professional fundraisers alike will find helpful tips and advice on time-proven fundraising techniques and the most profitable new ways to successfully raise money.

From Library Journal
Drawing on her experience in leading fundraising workshops for nonprofits, Flanagan has written a practical manual that will be of use to both novice and experienced fundraisers in all types of organizations. She provides an overview of all the possibilities–memberships, big gifts, planned giving, product sales and cause-related marketing, and foundation grants–and gives specific examples of strategies used by large and small organizations. Flanagan is also realistic about moving from dreaming about money to going out and getting it. She includes an annotated reading list and offers a good discussion of the resources provided by the Foundation Center and other organizations. In these lean times, nonprofits must know every revenue source. This book identifies those sources and offers ethical and profitable strategies for tapping them.

Tip: Approaching Donors When Selling

  • Before you start selling, make up a list of as many potential donors as possible. Start out with family and friends and use them as opportunities to build up confidence and perfect your technique. Then proceed to your neighbors and other people whom you feel would be interested in your cause.
  • Make sure you know why your group is running this fundraiser and make sure you can communicate it clearly to your potential donors. For example: “Our group is raising money in order to finance our trip to the annual dodgeball tournament in Sandusky, Ohio.”
  • Smile, be polite, speak clearly, and most importantly, be enthusiastic about your cause.
  • If possible, always carry around your fundraising products with you.
